When I look at the current world of business and more particularly small business I see a lot of fear.
Fear of taking a risk, fear of being judged and more prominently fear of failure.
Why are you so scared of failing?
If you look at virtually all the major successful business people in the world, they have all failed before (many times to be exact).
Even the guy above with the amazing head of hair says it best. If you never have tried anything new, you’re not going to make a mistake.
I’ll add to that, if you’re not going to try anything new, do things differently, then you’re obviously ok with the way things are now.
So you waive all right to complain.
But…if you want to make a difference in your life and your entrepreneurial journey you’re going to have to make mistakes.
Holy hell, I’ve made some doozies in my life (both personally and professionally). I’ve tried to branch out my business in different areas, only to learn that the market wasn’t there, I was spread too thin or I wasn’t really passionate about that. FAILURE.
Did I get discouraged or upset? NO. I simple said, “Well shit…guess that didn’t work, I won’t do that again”
It’s those course corrections that allow me to be wiser, more prepared and directed in any future decisions.
In the book Pyscho-Cybernetics (WHICH YOU NEED TO READ), they talk about how there is an area of the brain that works just like a servo-mechanism. Very similar to a self-guided missile, when it has a target in mind there is no input data that it’s doing things right. The only adjusting data that is registered is when there is a negative direction and therefore the appropriate correction is made to it.
As a human, your brain acts this same way. It’s highly unlikely that you will have a goal and know 100% of all the things you need to do to get to it and not make mistakes.
The mistakes are what makes your brain course correct. So failing at something is a healthy and natural way to grow mentally, physically and emotionally.
Now I can’t know what it is that you are going to create or launch next in your business but what I can tell you this.
“If you wait until you think it’s perfect before putting it out there then you will have waited too long and wasted too much time”.
Seth Godin is famous for saying “If you’re not absolutely embarrassed by the first version of what you’ve put to market, then you’d waited too long to do it”.
Why waste valuable time only to find out that what you’re doing is not right for the market or you’ve gone in the wrong direction.
Launch, make mistakes, CORRECT, make more mistakes, CORRECT, ENHANCE, make mistakes, MAKE MORE ENHANCEMENTS, arrive at target goal.
So think about what it is you’ve been wanting to do in your life but haven’t felt like you were fully prepared and just take a step towards doing it.
If you want to not do your bookkeeping any longer because you absolutely would rather take a fork to your eyes than do another bank reconciliation but you were wondering if you were ready to hire a bookkeeper…
Guess what, you’re friggin ready…hire them tomorrow.
You’ve been waiting to start a podcast but worried that people wouldn’t want to listen to little old you…
Guess what, who cares…DO IT.
Ol’ Wayne says it best.
So in closing I leave you with how I opened.
Why the F&%k are you afraid of failure?
